Final day of surgery! Busy day with ear reconstruction cases as well as burn contracture surgeries. Forty surgeries over three and a half days. Great team! Thanks to our hosts and most importantly our patients for honoring us with the privilege to care for them. Next mission will take place March 2018 in Khulna, Bangladesh.

Successful third day of surgery in the books with 10 cases of scar contracture, Ear reconstruction and burn repair. Sri Lanka, in particular Jaffa division in the north, suffered from a 30-year civil war that finished only 7 years ago. Many of the facial injuries we are seeing are related to the war. You can still see remnants of war - buildings burned down or riddled with bullet holes. Otherwise, Sri Lanka is a beautiful place full of warm people.

The second full day of surgeries was busy starting with rounding followed by ten procedures - burns, scar contracture repair, cleft lip and palate surgery. Our Sri Lankan hosts worked well with our team and as a result the day, while long, went smoothly.

The group arrived at the hospital to a very warm welcome and opening ceremony by the Lions club. The next several hours were spent screening 80+ patients - many with complex burn and Maxillofacial injuries sustained during the civil war as well as facial cleft patients. The day wrapped up with five surgeries. Thirty surgeries are planned over the next three days.

Smile Bangladesh is embarking on their twentieth mission over all and second mission to Sri Lanka .

We are once again returning to Jaffna, Sri Lanka for a 6-day mission.  This mission is unique as, in addition to clefts, we expect to treat facial burns and facial fractures that were sustained during the country's recent thirty-year civil war. 

Today we left from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Many of our team literally got off the plane hours before. We had an 8-hour bus ride up the western coast of Sri Lanka to the northern tip of this Island nation. After setting up in the hospital, we turned in for the evening with a plan for  tomorrow  of screening 80 patients and starting surgery.
